HOW TO START BOULDERING

Updated: Jul 13, 2022

We understand that it's always nice to know what to expect before trying something for the first time. This post will cover everything you need to know before your first bouldering session at Boulder Planet. Our gym staff will also help you out with anything else you need to know once you're in the gym.

Here are answers to some of the questions you may have about starting bouldering:

"Do I need to attend a class first, or can I just try on my own?"

In general, bouldering can be done without instructors being present as it is somewhat a self-service sport. However, we strongly encourage you to attend an introductory class to get proper guidance from the experts.

At Boulder Planet, we have a Starter Pack that includes a "First-timer Onboarding" session. Our climbing instructors will introduce you to the basics of bouldering and share several climbing guidelines to help you get started.

"What do I wear?"

You'll need to wear gym clothing that allows you to move your arms and legs freely.

Here's what we suggest:

  • Sport pants, tights/leggings, shorts.

  • T-shirts, singlets, tank tops.

  • Hair scrunchies for long hair.

"What footwear do I need?"

It would be best to have climbing shoes because regular shoes won't do when you are bouldering. However, you do not need to purchase one before coming for your first bouldering session, as you can rent it from us.

If you get Boulder Planet's Starter Pack, rental of climbing shoes are included in the package.

You may then buy yourself a pair of climbing shoes next time for long-term usage.

"Once I'm in the gym, what should I climb first?"

When you're starting to boulder, we advise that you begin with the easiest boulder problems. At Boulder Planet, Grade 1 is the easiest. You can find the grade chart that we have around the gym. It's also here for your reference:

Once you're done with the easier boulder problems, you may move on to higher grades.

"There's no rope or harness, so how will I come down?"

In our "What is Bouldering" post, we mentioned that thick landing mats surround the climbing surface, allowing you to land safely. As long as you land on your feet, bend your knees and roll on your back, you will be just fine.

"Anything else I need to know?"

Don't forget to have FUN!

Our boulders are curated to be accessible, dynamic and enjoyable. So don't miss out on the joy and start climbing at Boulder Planet NOW!
